Commodore's Corner

The kickoff event of the new 1999 sailing season was the very successful SCOA Annual Meeting held over Valentine's Day weekend in Newport R.I.  Past Commodore, Dan Von Riesen put together a very informative and entertaining agenda starting off with cocktails and munchies at the Hospitality Suite on Friday night.  The Saturday meeting and presentations included toics on "Preparing Your Boat for Cruising", "Upgrading Spars and Rigging", "Electronic Prop Inspection", "Crusing Newfoundland", "Refrigeratiion Retrofit", "Propane Conversion", "Wheel Installation on a SC31", and "Rigging Improvements on a SC-31 (rigid vang - lazy jacks - spinnaker pole)".  There was also a round-table discussion, open to the floor, on any and all subjects.  The short business meeting consisted primarily of a treasurer's report and the election of officers.  Bob Boudrot and Michael DeSisto are Commodore and Vice Commodore for 1999.  John Rohland was elected Treasurer, Charlie Claus is Secretary, Bill and DebbieDuggan continue to be the Newsletter Editors, and Judy Boudrot was named Web Captain.   The dinner speaker at the SCOA Banquet was Mike Martel from the Johua Slocum Society.  He presented slides and spoke eloquently on Slocum's life and 1889 Voyage into History.  The meetings finished up with an informal get together at the Commodore's suite on Sunday Morning.  As always, it was great to renew acquaintances and friendships, discuss common problems and solutions, and just 'hang out' with others who share your love of boating and Southern Cross/Gilmer Yachts.
